Notes from the Meeting 14th October 2009
The Inter-School Liaison Group Meeting was held on Wednesday 14th October, at Firbank Grammar School in Brighton. The Principal, Dr. Anne Sarros gave the Welcome Address and opened the meeting.
Special Agenda Items were as follows:
Long Service Leave for VCE Teachers
The issue was discussed. Commonly amongst schools, teachers are required to apply for LSL up to 12 months in advance. These teachers would then not teach VCE in that year. Alternatively, these teachers may take VCE subjects, but their LSL replacement would be by someone with the same qualifications. The timing of LSL has to be planned so as to make sure that students have minimal disruptions during their studies. It was suggested that the Principals’ Association might take this up as an area of concern.
Lists of Guest Speakers
Many good suggestions came forward in discussion, with Mr Jeff Kennett and Ms Kaz Cooke popular. It was generally felt that if you looked within your alumni community there will be those of interest to present as guest speakers (eg at one school a local doctor had spoken about brain development and how boys think; at another, the school gardener had presented to a small group about water conservation and the change in needs for grasses and water storage).
Drinkwise
A Power Point Presentation has been put together by Dr Aaron, White Drug and Alcohol Researcher, which is suitable for adults and children. Copies are available through ISLG.
GSV (Girls Sports Victoria) Sports
Peter Russo, Director of Sport for Firbank, has been impressed with the level of enthusiasm, involvement and commitment that GSV sport promotes, however there will always be a group that misses out on selection. Without more coaches and facilities to run increased level of programmes this situation will continue. GSV also holds Saturday sessions for those interested, which include skills training, and introduce girls to a variety of different sports (eg cycling, gold, triathlons). Participants are voluntary, and the level of interest is high.
