Vocal Concert 2010

In late July the Vocal Concert was held in Royce Theatre, when our many talented singers showed what wonderful ability Ruyton girls have in the vocal area. Over 200 girls participated around the theme What a Wonderful World, featuring songs from the global community. Junior and Senior School girls all took part in what is one of the most important and eagerly anticipated nights in the Music Programme. Some of the songs included Put a Little Love in your Heart, Practically Perfect, Mr Sandman, What a Wonderful World and We are the World.

Congratulations to all the School vocal teachers, including Ms Eva Anagostou, Ms Liza O’Hanlon and Ms Annette Roche. A particular thank you goes to our Choral Director, Ms Jane Summers and to our Junior School Music Director, Mrs Rebecca Barker. Also, thank you to accompanists Mr Shaun Jones, Ms Sonja Horbelt and Mr Ivan Rosa and we acknowledge, with thanks, the support of Mrs Candi Browne and FORMA for assisting in numerous ways on the night.

Annual Music Concert 2010

The Annual Music Concert featured girls from both the Junior School and the Senior School, and took place at the George Wood Performing Arts Centre, Yarra Valley Grammar School, on Friday 20 August. Approximately 700 parents, families and friends were treated to a musical extravaganza, featuring music from all over the world and from some of the great song writers and composers, including Stevie Wonder, George Bizet, Edvard Grieg, JS Bach, George Torbay and Gustav Holst.
The night started with Bizet’s Farandole performed by the 100-piece Henty Orchestra. This led us into MiniMads performing The Keelrow, a Northumbrian folk song by Michael Neaum, followed by Why We Sing by Greg Gilpin. Other highlights from the first half included the Music Tour Choir singing I Am Australian, the Senior Strings rendition of Morning and Death of the Ise from Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and an amazing performance of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue No. 6 in D Minor by Betty Xiong.

In the second half, the Percussion Ensemble performed Fluro Stomp in the dark. The remainder of the night included the 180-strong Choirs of Ruyton singing Music From Sister Act, the Senior Concert Band performing the exciting work Brick Street Encounter and the Walsh Singers with Steppin’ Out With My Baby, complete with sparkly hats! The finale featured all Senior Girls either singing, or playing, the theme from the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace. It was an exhilarating way to conclude an extraordinary night of music.

Music Tour 2010

On Saturday 11 September, 28 very excited girls and five members of staff met at Melbourne Airport to board the Qantas flight taking us to New York, Boston, Montreal and Los Angeles.

After the 22 hour journey, we arrived in New York tired but elated to be in one of the world’s greatest cities. The next three days included a cruise around Manhattan Island, shopping on Fifth Avenue, Soho and Times Square, West Side Story on Broadway, touring Radio City Music Hall, and visiting Central Park, Grand Central Station and the World Trade Centre site. In between all this the girls managed to fit in two performances!

Our next stop was the Dana Hall School in the leafy suburb of Wellesley, about 30 minutes drive from downtown Boston. The girls experienced home stays for the first time and were excellent ambassadors for Ruyton. They spent time in class, and performed to the Dana Hall School girls, and to Montrose School. They also spent time with their hosts visiting Boston sights and participated in the famous Duck Tour.

We then travelled to Montreal, where we were hosted by two schools, The Study and The Queen of Angels Academy. It was a very different cultural experience being in the province of Quebec: we were greeted in French and exposed to French culture all the time. The musical highlight whilst in Montreal was a combined rehearsal and mini concert with the young people from the EMNBS Chorale. It was a special night, - Ms Jane Summers and their choir director, Ms Patricia Abbott, led both groups in warm ups and the rehearsal of new songs. At the end of the night we performed for one another, with our girls singing some of their repertoire in French, which was enthusiastically received.

Early on Friday 24 September, we flew to Los Angeles via Dallas for a brief visit, fitting in the Santa Monica Pier, Rodeo Drive and Hollywood Boulevard. On our final day, the 35 degree heat at Disneyland did not prevent us enjoying all that was on offer. Then it was straight to the airport for our journey home.

Congratulations to all the girls for their co-operation and positive attitudes. Sincere thanks go to Ms Jane Summers, Ms Sonja Horbelt, Mr Shaun Jones and Mrs Amanda Russell for leading the tour.
