Mathematics

The Mathematics programmes available to Ruyton students are designed to provide girls with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential. The Mathematics Mainstream, Mathematics Extended, Mathematics Accelerated and Mathematics Modified courses of study all maintain a balance between challenge, encouragement, and support of girls so that they achieve at their highest level possible. Selection into programmes is objective and rigorous and is administered by the Dean of Mathematics. Invitations are extended to girls to participate in particular courses after endorsement by the Principal.

The graph below shows the percentage of Ruyton students, across all three VCE Mathematics subjects, who achieved scaled study scores of 40 or higher, scaled scores between 30 and 39 and scores between 20 and 29 over the past seven years.

The next graph shows the mean scaled study scores of Ruyton students over the past seven years.

The table below lists the average NAPLAN numeracy scores for Ruyton students and for all Australian students.

The next table lists the number of awards received by Ruyton students in extramural Mathematics competitions over the past seven years.

In the 2010 Year 7 Mathematics Games Day, held at Overnewton Anglican Community College, the Ruyton Team consisting of Jemma Billinghurst, Janet Huang, Kaiwen Tang and Team Captain Eliza Li, secured second place.

The National Mathematics Summer School is the oldest and most prestigious school of its type in Australia. As a result of her outstanding record of performance in the Australian Mathematics Competition, Karen Tan of Year 11 was invited to take the entrance examination for the 43rd Summer School to be held in Canberra from the 9 to the 22 January 2011. Karen did well in the examination and won a place in the National Mathematics Summer School.
