Physical Education

‘True enjoyment comes from activity of the mind and exercise of the body; the two are united.’ Alexander von Humbolt (1769-1859), European explorer and naturalist.

2009 has certainly been a year of ‘mind and body exercises’ in the Physical Education Department.

Highlights include:
• The success of Miss Larkin’s diligent Year 11 and 12 students in VCE Physical Education. Congratulations to Holly Aitken (2008) for her perfect study score of 50. 74% of the class achieved scores of 40 or more - a commendable result! In the 2009 class, Amanda Pike has been awarded the Year 12 VCE prize for PE.

House Sport – incorporates popular activities for all girls. Inter House competitions in Swimming, Diving, Cross Country and Athletics were held during the year and the emphasis was on fun and participation. We applaud Anderson and Lascelles girls for their equal first placing in the House Cup competition this year.

Sports Captain – We thank Sarah Clements for her leadership and detailed sports reports at Friday Assemblies.

Aquatic Centre – Mr Anthony Coulson and Mr Darren Tullberg have been very busy poolside this year! All Ruyton girls from Prep to Year 6 have participated in Swimming lessons. Senior School students also learned Aqua Aerobics, Deep-Water Running, Survival Swimming and Water Polo.

Ruyton Saturday Netball Club – With over 220 girls playing Saturday Netball, the RSNC continues to thrive. We extend sincere thanks to Kathryn Woolcock for her outstanding contribution to this club over 9 years. She has been a coach, umpire, player, administrator and mentor to our Ruyton students. We wish her well in her teaching career next year.

Year 7 Sports Expo – 70 Ruyton girls participated in the annual GSV Sports Expo at Box Hill’s Aqualink Centre. Specialist coaches conducted introductory sessions in a plethora of sports such as Beach Tennis, Calisthenics, European Handball, Futsal (Indoor Soccer), Cheerleading and many others. Our Year 7s thoroughly enjoyed the novel activities.

Year 9/10 PE electives – Mr Damian Harrison joined the PE Department this year and taught the Outdoor Education elective. The students enjoyed weekend Bushwalks and overnight Camps, Canoeing, Indoor Rock Climbing, Orienteering and associated theory work.

Year 9/10 Advanced PE elective – Ms Carolyn Gardner directed this class, introducing components of physical fitness and training methods. The girls also participated in several excursions related to the course.

In Physical Education this year, our students have learned the skills, rules, tactics and benefits of a wide variety of activities. These range from ‘traditional’ sports such as Basketball, Soccer, Gymnastics and Dance to recreational pursuits in Year 11 including Yoga, Self Defence, Canoeing, Indoor Rock Climbing and many others.

We thank students, staff and parents for their enthusiasm, commitment and generous support of Physical Education and Sport at Ruyton.
