Welcome to the Ruyton Aquatic Centre.
Officially opened in June 2008, by swimming icon Nicole Livingstone OAM, the Centre features a 25m heated indoor swimming pool and purpose-built heated learning pool. A Strength and Fitness Room overlooks the pools on a mezzanine level.
Programmes
Programmes at the Centre cater for varying age groups and abilities, from Parent and Child classes through to the Advanced Fast Track group. Helping children become safe around the water and assisting them to reach a higher level of swimming performance at a much earlier age are just some of the goals underpinning the programmes at Ruyton.
The Ruyton Aquatics Swim School is registered with Swim Australia.
Parent & Child Classes
Parent & Child classes offer a relaxed opportunity for parents to help their children experience the aquatic environment in a supporting and encouraging setting. Classes are offered to children from the age of 12 months to 3 years of age and are a fantastic social opportunity, too.
The emphasis at these classes is to allow the children to become familiar with water by gaining positive aquatic experiences. Led by an instructor parents are empowered to help their own children develop respect for the water and the rules of the aquatic environment.
Classes are 30 minutes in length, running on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. All children under the age of 2 are required to wear swimmer nappies underneath their bathers.
Pre-School Learners
Pre-School classes are offered each weekday morning during school term for children from 3 years of age. Classes run for 30 minutes and have a maximum of 4 students per class. Pre-School classes utilise the Aquatic Centre’s purpose-built Learners’ Pool in a fun and enjoyable environment. Water temperature is maintained above 32°C throughout the year.
Key focus is placed on helping the children develop water safety and personal survival skills at an early age, together with correct fundamental swimming skills. Children are encouraged to experience deep water and to challenge themselves throughout a range of activities.
School-Aged Lessons
The School-Aged Learn-to-Swim programme follows a syllabus customised to Ruyton Aquatics. Lessons focus on developing water safety skills and giving students a solid grounding in quality fundamental skills, building good stroke technique as they progress. School-Aged lessons currently run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after school, and Saturday mornings.
The Ruyton Aquatics syllabus ensures that all swimming strokes are covered, starting from an early age. Water safety skills and personal survival skills are a major focus at every level of the Programme. Teaching staff encourage classes to be active and involved.
Classes run for 30 minutes. The Swim School places importance on its teacher:student ratios in relation to developmental levels. Ratios therefore begin at 1:4 and increase as skill levels increase.
Fast-Track Swimming – Accelerated Learning
Ruyton Aquatics Swim School hosts an additional stream of swimming education and development. The Fast-Track stream is an Accelerated Learning Programme that aims to see students progress more quickly than in standard classes. Fast-Track comprises 2 compulsory sessions per week in a coaching environment.
Class numbers are higher in this stream, with the dynamic closer to that of a squad. The minimum age for commencement is 5 years. There are 3 groups:
- Junior Fast Track (2 x 30 minute classes per week)
- Fast-Track (2 x 60 minute classes per week)
- Advanced Fast Track (2 x 60 minute classes per week).
Fast-Track Learning presents students with an exciting and challenging approach to their swimming. It seeks to teach swimmers a high level of stroke technique in all competitive strokes, as well as to develop racing skills such as diving, tumble-turns and correct finishes.
Fast-Track is ideal for keen students with a minimum standard of swimming skill who want to progress quickly.
Encouragement Meets are held from time-to-time (information is distributed by coaches and instructors). Attendance at these Meets is voluntary.
